GCSE Maths: How to Move from Grade 4 to Grade 7

A practical revision plan for students who are passing and want to aim higher.

1. Find out exactly where marks are lost

Start with a full past paper under timed conditions, then mark it with the official mark scheme. Sort lost marks into three groups: topics not yet understood, careless errors, and running out of time. Each needs a different fix.

2. Secure the core first

Grade 7 is built on a solid grade 5. Make sure number, fractions, percentages, ratio and basic algebra are completely reliable before spending time on the hardest questions.

3. Target the higher-grade topics

  • Algebra: rearranging formulae, quadratics and simultaneous equations
  • Geometry: trigonometry, Pythagoras and circle theorems
  • Statistics and probability: tree diagrams and cumulative frequency
  • Multi-step problem-solving questions that combine topics

4. Practise like the real exam

Work through past papers for your exam board, timed, and review every mistake. Keep a short list of recurring errors and check it before each paper. Showing working clearly earns method marks even when the final answer is wrong.

5. Sit a proper mock

A mock marked the way examiners mark gives an honest grade and a clear list of improvement targets for the weeks that remain.

Frequently asked questions

Should my child sit Foundation or Higher?+

Grade 7 is only available on the Higher tier. A tutor or teacher can advise based on recent past-paper scores.

How many past papers should we do?+

Quality matters more than quantity. One timed paper per week, fully reviewed, is more useful than several rushed ones.
